Climate Change: What I Learned From Bill Gates

When it comes to change we all have to start somewhere. While I was studying extramurally for my degree I heard an inspiring story about a mother and daughter. The mother was wondering if, at her age, it was really worth starting a degree. “I’ll be in my mid-fifties by the time I finish it”, she said.

“And how old will you be if you don’t do the degree?” replied her daughter.

Bill and Melinda Gates spearheaded major health programmes in the developing world, now they seem to be focusing on climate change and other environmental issues.

Bill’s super intelligent and a good presenter, but what I really like is his super-positive attitude: look at the problem, decide how it can be solved, do it.

Having faith in the ingenuity of humankind, supporting it, nurturing research and creativity, that’s what is going to get us there.

He talks about what causes greenhouse gas emissions. Most of us think it’s all about (non-) renewable energy: not so, says Bill. He talks of the power of innovation, and how we must support innovation to create the change we need. This is eco-positivity!

Having faith in the ingenuity of humankind, supporting it, nurturing research and creativity, that’s what is going to get us there.

Like my degree, like learning to play the piano, we all have to start somewhere.
